Understand what AI-writing and similarity results measure, why their scores differ, and why neither is a verdict on academic misconduct.
Similarity checking identifies text matching other sources. AI detection estimates writing patterns associated with generated text. They answer different questions, so an AI score and a similarity score should not be combined into one originality score.

A match is a starting point for review
Quoted or referenced material can still match a source. Turnitin describes its Similarity Report as a comparison tool, not a plagiarism decision. Read the passage and its attribution before interpreting the percentage.

An AI indicator is not proof of authorship
Turnitin warns that its model can misclassify writing and should not be the sole basis for adverse action against a student. A report is one input to a review, not a substitute for the applicable academic policy and human judgment.
What if the results disagree?
First check that you are comparing the same type of result. A low similarity score does not answer the AI-writing question. Two AI tools may also use different methods; averaging their scores does not produce a validated result.
- Keep each provider and report type visible.
- Review the actual passages, not only the summary number.
- Keep drafts, source notes and revision history to explain your work when needed.

Does 0% similarity mean a document is human-written?
No. Similarity matching and authorship are different questions. Do not use a similarity result as an AI-writing result.
Should I buy both report types?
Only if you need both types of information. Review the deliverables and your institution’s requirements rather than assuming that more scores are always useful.
