Can Turnitin detect ChatGPT or Gemini writing?
Understand what an AI-writing report can tell you—and why it cannot identify a chatbot or guarantee a particular detection outcome.
Turnitin’s AI-writing feature looks for generated-writing patterns, but a report is not a record of which chatbot someone used. Do not treat a flag as proof of ChatGPT or Gemini use, or a low result as proof that no AI was used.
Capability is not a guarantee for every document
Provider models change over time and differ across supported languages. Turnitin publishes model release notes; a result should be interpreted in the context of the report date and language, not as a permanent guarantee about a particular chatbot.

Do not infer the tool from a percentage
An AI-writing percentage is not a receipt, chat transcript or provenance record. For a particular document, ask what tools were used, for which tasks, and whether that use was permitted and disclosed. Those are different questions from whether a detector flags a passage.
Start with the permitted-use policy
An assignment may distinguish brainstorming, editing and generating submission text. Keep a truthful record of any assistance and use the required disclosure format. A detector result does not replace those obligations.
- Read the rules for the specific assignment or journal.
- Keep the document version and any relevant assistance records.
- Choose a report because it supplies information you need, not a promised outcome.
Common questions
Can Textsure guarantee that AI writing will be found?
No. False positives and missed detections are possible; no outcome is guaranteed for a particular text.
Does a new model update change my old PDF?
A saved PDF is the report delivered at that time. Turnitin’s release notes state that its cited model updates do not retroactively update previously generated reports.
