What does a Turnitin AI score mean?
Read an AI-writing percentage without confusing it with similarity, authorship probability or an academic verdict.
A Turnitin AI percentage describes the share of qualifying prose flagged by its detector. It is not the probability that the author used AI, and it is independent of the similarity score.
Check what the percentage refers to
The report evaluates qualifying prose rather than necessarily every character or page. A document with tables, references and other non-prose content can therefore have an AI percentage that does not describe its entire length.
Use the report to ask specific questions
Start with the flagged passage, then read the surrounding paragraph. Ask what the passage contributes to the argument and how it developed. Keep a review note tied to the exact file version instead of recording only a percentage.

- Keep drafts, outlines, source notes and revision history where available.
- Apply the receiving institution’s rules on permitted and disclosed AI use.
Do not replace an unavailable result with zero
A numeric score, an asterisk and an unavailable indicator mean different things. Read the status in the actual report. If processing is incomplete, wait for the order outcome rather than assuming a score or submitting again immediately.
