What does *% mean in an AI Writing Report?
Distinguish a suppressed low-range AI result from 0%, a missing report or a processing error.
In Turnitin’s current guidance, *% represents a result above 0% and below 20%. The exact percentage and highlights are withheld because results in this range are less reliable. It is not 0%.

Do not estimate the hidden number
An asterisk does not tell you whether the underlying result was close to the bottom or top of the range. Record it as *%, exactly as supplied, rather than turning it into a made-up percentage.
What should you do next?
Keep the report and document version together. If you need to share the result, include the indicator explanation and discuss it under the relevant institutional policy. A second detector’s percentage cannot reveal the hidden number in this report.
Common questions
Does *% mean the download failed?
No. It can appear in a successfully generated AI Writing Report. An unavailable or error state is different.
Should I keep checking until I get 0%?
Repeated paid checks are not a substitute for reviewing your work and following the applicable policy. A new check also creates a new report and cost.
